The IMH is pleased to announce and organize a very special online 12 hour 3 weeks course that will be personally conducted by Associate Professor Dr. Michelle Mars for all IMH Students, Diplomates / Graduates, Faculty and Staff, and for non-IMH participants (undergraduate students and other professionals) interested in learning about Trauma and its impact, diagnosis, treatment and management (Traumatology).

Aims of the Traumatology-Part 1 Course

In this online certificate course you will be introduced to trauma informed practice and state of the art therapy protocols in regards to working with trauma.

Two areas of trauma work on complex trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are the main focus of this course.

The area of complex trauma is understood to be the result of children’s exposure to multiple traumatic events, often of an invasive and interpersonal nature.

The wide ranging and pervasive effects of adverse childhood events, in particular childhood
trauma, on later life functioning and adult mental health are a key theme throughout the
course. You will be asked to consider the impact of trauma throughout the lifespan.

PTSD is a separate trauma diagnosis that can be understood as the result of a combination of
thoughts, behaviors and feelings. PTSD tends to be linked to more discreet and identifiable events than complex trauma. However, the diagnosis is no longer limited to horrific events such as war and disaster and has been broadened to take into account longer term exposures occurring in childhood and across the lifespan. Mostly we resolve distress naturally but for some people emotional distress continues long after the event has passed. This is when the diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is likely to be made. There is a link between Adverse Childhood Events and complex trauma and an individuals propensity to develop PTSD.

Trauma informed practice is increasingly recognized as a method of working with clients in a
deep way to heal the source of psychological issues. Addictions, disordered eating and other
problems individuals experience, whether they realize it or not, are often a response to past
trauma. Working with the trauma history rather than the symptom (for example the addiction
or dysfunctional behavior) has the potential to lead to lasting healing and resolution of the
symptomatic response.

Trauma has been recognized as one of the most complex areas to work. Complex trauma
histories pose some of the most difficult challenges and dilemmas faced by therapists and
other helping professionals. Emotional and physical safety and trust are vital in the therapeutic
relationship. A collaborative and empowering relationship between the therapist and client is
vital to the treatment.
